STUDENT OBLIGATIONS

STUDENT OBLIGATIONS
Congratulations on being accepted into the A-JAM jazz honors program! Students admitted to the A-JAM program have certain obligations beyond those of regular students. Some of these obligations govern entry into the program, some are requirements for completion of the program and some are requirements for applying to participate in the IASJ international jazz meeting and other opportunities offered by the program.
All students must maintain good academic standing and must:
  1. Register for and complete the following courses at any of the 5 Alamo Colleges. Courses must be taken during the regular Spring semester. MUAP 1185: Improvisation AND MUEN 1122: Jazz Ensemble
  2. Progress through their respective programs. The criteria for graduation can be found on the Alamo Colleges website: http://alamo.edu.
  3. Attend a minimum of five A-JAM events (concerts, workshops, master classes, other performances) during the Spring semester, times and dates TBD. Your improvisation mentor and/or the A-JAM director will inform you of these opportunities.
  4. Participate in a minimum of 10 jam sessions--2 per month from January through May--at an approved venue. If approved by your A-JAM mentor, targeted A-JAM combo rehearsals may be counted among the jam sessions.
  5. Answer all email and/or phone communications by the A-JAM director and/or your A-JAM improv mentor in a timely manner (i.e., within 36 hours).
  6. Participate in A-JAM combo performances, as required. These may either be pro bono (unpaid) or paid performances, and will involve 1 or more rehearsals prior to the event.
Students who are accepted into the IASJ international jazz meeting must:
  1.  Register for and complete the following course in any of the 5 Alamo Colleges. Course must be taken during the Summer I semester. MUAP 1185: Improvisation (or MUAP 1285: Improvisation, as appropriate)
  2. Work with an Alamo Colleges Financial Aid specialist to apply for all available and applicable financial aid.
  3. Secure a passport, visa, and all other items required for international travel.
  4. File the necessary paperwork with Alamo Colleges Office of International Programs required for travel abroad.
  5. Understand and fulfill all student financial obligations involved in participating in the international jazz meeting. Costs vary from year to year, location to location.
  6. Understand that, while your name will be submitted to the organizers of the international jazz meeting,  not all A-JAM honors students are accepted into that meeting. Combos are highly competitive, and selection into one of the 6 combos is made by the host school for that year’s meeting, not by the A-JAM program director.

  1. Nice! A valid passport is required to visit visa-free countries.Without a passport, you will not be able to enter any country. If the passport has not yet expired but has 7 months or less validity, the applicant can still apply in the renewal category. Here is the complete guide of Online Passport Renewal
